“Bassem Youssef is my hero.” – Jon Stewart

Named one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” by TIME magazine and one of Foreign Policy magazine’s list of “100 Leading Global Thinkers,” Bassem Youssef was a practicing cardiothoracic surgeon before 2011. But when the Arab Spring inspired millions of Egyptians to take to the streets and protest their dictatorial political regime, Youssef created a series of humorous, yet controversial political webisodes to spark further public conversation.

Garnering an enormous public following, Al-Bernameg (The Program) – a satirical new program and the first-of-its-kind in the Middle East became the most popular television show in Egypt’s history, with an average of 30 million viewers every week.

Al-Bernameg was enormously controversial for its hilarious and bold criticism of the ruling powers and the show was terminated after three seasons. Accused of being “anti-Islam” and insulting the President, Youssef was arrested and interrogated before being released on bail. He now lives in Los Angeles, CA – in exile from Egypt.

In The Joke Is Mightier than the Sword, Youssef shares his personal story and his thoughts on the political climate that led to the Arab Spring, its parallels to the current state of American politics and how propaganda lays the foundation for dictatorial regimes.

Youssef’s new book Revolution For Dummies: Laughing Through The Arab Spring, will be available for sale (and signing!) at the performance in partnership with Parnassus Books.

The Joke Is Mightier than the Sword is approximately 75 minutes.

OZ Arts will host a Q&A for the audience following the performance.

This performance is in English.
