I must admit that I was a bit nervous as I waited for the call. Scanning the crowd, I kept hoping that I might find a familiar face. But no, I was on my own. Suddenly the phone rang, and I was off on what must surely be the most unique piece of theater I’ve ever experienced.

The play, “Since I Suppose,” physically takes the audience — one person at a time — on a fully immersive “theatrical journey” through the streets of Nashville. Armed with a smartphone and wearing a headset, I soon became more than just an audience member — I was an active participant in the story.

And what a story it is. Based on Shakespeare’s classic urban play “Measure for Measure,” “Since I Suppose” is not a literal production of that work. But it does a marvelous job of exploring the play’s central themes of power, corruption and morality through a series of surprisingly visceral experiences and encounters. You need not have any previous knowledge of the original material. The characters are introduced in smart fashion, and there are plenty of prompts along the way to ensure audience clarity.
