Theme: The Future

This daylong multi-arts program engages 5 to 15 year-old students at Centennial Performing Arts Studios on days when Metro Nashville Public Schools are out of session on public holidays. Metro Parks’ Centennial Performing Arts Studios are located in the 27th Avenue North and Poston Street corner of Nashville, Tennessee’s beautiful Centennial Park.

Each date has a unique, contemporary theme which inspire the workshops in visual art, theater, music and movement the students will rotate through led by a Nashville based teaching artists working in each of their respective disciplines.

5-8 year olds • 9-11 year olds • 12-15 year olds

The 2015-2016 academic school year is OZ Art’s second year of OZ School Days programming.

Workshops

Visual Arts Workshop with Courtney Adair Johnson

Future Flags: Depict your idea of the future through sustainable making. Each student will cut, construct and assemble a five-pendant strand of flags illustrating their ideas for what will make Nashville’s future great. Future Flags will be made with repurposed materials demonstrating environmental awareness in art making and everyday life.

Courtney Adair Johnson is an artist, environmentalist and community organizer. Her art practice works to create sustainable community through reuse awareness. She is interested in building ideas with art to generate awareness of our waste and consumption habits. Courtney has led reuse projects with Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Tennessee Craft and Springboard for the Arts. Working with non-profits and community organizations to gain insight on how to create sustainable solutions through art is what fascinates her.

Music Workshop with Misty Rae Carson

In this workshop, students will explore the theme of “the Future” through a Songwriting 101. Through free writing, brainstorming and collaboration students will work together as a group to create the music and lyrics for a brand new song they will perform and record together.

Misty Rae Carson is an experienced and talented singer/songwriter, musician and teaching artist who has done numerous programs for students with the the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Movement Workshopwith Carrie Gerrow

Considering everyday movements & gestures, students will build an original movement phrase constructed from the their own stories. Each class will then learn tools for manipulating those specific gestures in fresh and unexpected ways in order to sculpt new expressions for the future.

Carrie Gerrow is Nashville-based dancer, choreographer and educator. She holds a BFA in Dance from New World School of the Arts, has danced with several classical and contemporary companies and teaches dance, somatics, and kinesiology throughout Middle Tennessee. Exploring the world through dance is a great adventure in her life and sharing the experience with others is a joy and honor.

Theater Workshop with Lauren Fitzgerald

Students will explore ideas of their potential future through improvised movement and sound. Each participant will first conceive, then express their prediction using their body, imagination, and voice for a 360 degree perspective.

Lauren Fitzgerald is a teaching artist, actress, and librarian based out of Nashville. She has performed on several stages such as the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia PA and the Nashville Children’s theatre right here in town.
