NASHVILLE, TENN. – March 8, 2017 – OZ Arts Nashville is pleased to welcome back the creators of the innovative live-action graphic novel series The Intergalactic Nemesis for performances of Books 2 and 3 of the project, Robot Planet Rising and Twin Infinity. Blending the magic of a radio drama with the energy of a science fiction comic book, these one-of-a-kind, all-ages stage works feature more than 1,000 hand-drawn, full-color comic-book images blasting from the screen while three actors, a foley artist and a keyboardist perform the voices, sound effects and music live.
The Intergalactic Nemesis creator-director Jason Neulander and his collaborators will perform Robot Planet Rising on Friday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m.; Robot Planet Rising at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 and Twin Infinity that evening on April 29 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $59 for adults and $29 for children. There is also a “Double Feature Saturday” price for both Saturday shows of $95 for adults and $45 for children. Tickets can be purchased as of March 29 at www.ozartsnashville.org. In creating The Intergalactic Nemesis, Neulander drew inspiration from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars and the pulp serials of the 1930s. Book One: Target Earth, which OZ Arts presented in 2014, was a period adventure story featuring Pulitzer-winning reporter Molly Sloan, her intrepid assistant Timmy Mendez, and a mysterious librarian named Ben Wilcott facing down the most serious threat Earth has ever known: an impending invasion of sludge monsters from the planet Zygon. When Target Earth premiered in Austin, Texas, in 2010, more than 2,100 people turned out. Shortly thereafter, it was featured on NPR and on “Conan.” The production has been touring the world ever since, including a run on Broadway and a sold-out showing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
No previous Intergalatic Nemesis experience is necessary for audiences to enjoy Books 2 and 3. In Robot Planet Rising, the year is 1933. The time: two weeks after the conclusion of Target Earth. The place: Robonovia, the Robot Planet. When commander El-Bee-Dee-Oh is lost in space, it’s up to Molly Sloan and Timmy Mendez to find him. But when Molly’s former fiancé shows up with his assistant (and Soviet spy) Natasha Zorokov in tow, Molly and Timmy discover a plot that threatens not only the very existence of Robonovia, but the safety of Earth itself. Will they uncover the source of the problem? And just who is this robot who calls himself “Alphatron,” anyway?
Twin Infinity brings us to Molly Sloan’s and geneticist Ben Wilcott’s wedding day in 1942. Ben hasn’t shown up to the altar. When Molly goes to his apartment, she finds him. But it’s not him, after all. It’s a different Ben. A more bookish Ben. A librarian Ben. So Molly enlists this Ben to help her find the other Ben and, in the process, brings a whole new definition to the word “love.”
The company performing at OZ Arts Nashville includes Rachel Landon, Brock England and, in a rare appearance, Neulander; foley artist Kelly Matthews; and musician Harlan Hodges.
