Clear and Sweet is a multi-disciplinary performance, incorporating dance, visual design and live vocals. Based on an inquiry into the raw and uniquely American tradition of Shape Note Singing, Zoe Scofield’s angular, intense choreography and Juniper Shuey’s cutting-edge visual design embody a search for redemption, shifting points of perspective for the audience.

Performed in the “hollow square” with audience members surrounding the dance space on four sides, Clear and Sweet adopts Sacred Harp’s profoundly inclusive and democratic practice of social singing by providing shape-note song books. The audience is invited to join the a capella, four-part harmonies sung throughout the performance, encouraging diversity in participation as part of our shared cultural heritage. 

The performance is 65 minutes with no intermission.
