Télérama

“Astoundingly theatrical and precise”

Seeing Dance

Fierce physicality is punctuated by startling precision in this gripping trilogy by young French phenomenon Leïla Ka, who burst on the global dance scene with a bracing fusion of meticulous choreography and feminist activism. Billowing vintage dresses become instruments of resistance as they evoke different eras and patterns of conformity and power in this triptych — You’re the One We Love, Bouffées (Gasp), and Pode Ser (Could it be). Driven by a visceral movement language blending Hip-hop and contemporary forms, these three powerful portraits of womanhood pulse with raw emotion and theatrical precision to trace a journey through docility, liberation, and self-discovery, revealing bodies that bend, resist, and ultimately reclaim their own stories.

Leïla Ka brings the U.S. premiere of her trilogy to OZ soon after being called France’s “most in-demand young choreographer” by Le Monde. Beginning in Hip-hop and street dance, she went on to work with renowned contemporary choreographer Maguy Marin before emerging as a singular creative voice, earning prestigious international awards and even choreographing the finale for Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour.
