These Shapes Mean Something is the collective work of 15 current students at Watkins College of Art who all found a way to convey a story through their art. The work shown explores the relationship between illustration and narration, experimenting with blurred lines of reality and fantasy. With bold colors and innovative composition, each piece aims to communicate a story, whether that be of our day-to-day existence or a world we can only imagine. The resulting display of diverse imagery invites the spectator to dream, empathize, laugh, and celebrate. These exciting young artists capture the human experience with not only each other but with nature through the use of both digital and traditional mediums.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Sasha Campbell is a 20 year-old junior at Watkins College of Art, and president of the Watkins Animation and Illustration Club (WAIC). Originally hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, Sasha is currently studying illustration and learning animation on the side. In addition to creating more illustrative work, they hope to continue to work in more galleries in the future. Connect with Sasha on Instagram @sad.ha

Entering its second year, Watkins Animation and Illustration Club was founded to help students at Watkins learn about animation and further strengthen their illustration skills. Not only does the club practice and learn, but the members go into their community to create and sell items such as stickers, coasters, magnets, and more. Earlier this year, WAIC hosted their first gallery Delineate during Watkin’s annual Family Appreciation Day. Building on the success of Delineate, the club’s next showcase Delineate 2.0 was a show held at the Watkins Art Gallery in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood during the July 2019 Art Crawl.
